Meet David, a quality technician in nVent’s Electrical & Fastening Solutions (EFS) business segment, who works in Chandler, Arizona. Joining nVent more than a year ago, David has enjoyed working in an environment that encourages employees to bring bold ideas, be authentic, and build the future of a more sustainable and electrified world. David says his military career instilled in him the values of teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving. He uses these valuable skills not only in his work, but also influences his team with the same.

David says he appreciates nVent’s dedication to its veteran employees, offering resources and support tailored to their needs. He believes that the company’s culture of inclusion, coupled with a leadership team that genuinely cares, is appealing to veterans. He says nVent embodies the sense of camaraderie he experienced in the military, making it a great fit for him and other veterans alike.

He currently serves on the leadership team for our Veterans Employee Resource Group (ERG), whose mission is to build awareness of the unique perspectives and skills veterans bring to the workplace. What is your former branch of service and military specialty (MOS)?

US Navy, aviation structural mechanic.

How did you discuss your military experience and the transferable/technical skills you possess when you interviewed at nVent?

The military placed me in many situations where the path wasn’t clear. Through this I learned how to view challenges from multiple angles and work through difficult situations. Whether the stressors were physical, weather, time-critical or all of the above, I was able to overcome the obstacles to accomplish the goal. With this in mind, I can be adaptive and open-minded when confronting the challenges of the role, and I will find a way to accomplish the goal.

What skills gained during your military service do you apply to your daily work or institute with your teams?

Being a team player. Using critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Looking at process over person when viewing an issue. Staying locked on the mission.

How do you incorporate your military service into your personal and professional brand currently?

I use it as a way to break the ice with a funny story or use it as a way break up the tension in a long day.

What support does nVent or the Veteran’s ERG offer that has aided your transition into civilian work?

nVent cares about veterans and wants to help with resources particular to our group, such as the Veterans ERG.

How does nVent’s culture appeal to specifically veterans?

It is a culture of inclusion, and I really feel like my leadership team cares about me and my success. They have shown care in both my personal and professional life. This is a big part of the military lifestyle, having that feeling of camaraderie.
